Duolingo Social Media Strategy: What It Cost to Build

Duolingo's social media strategy turned an owl into a character people follow. What worked, the mechanic underneath, and what it cost its creator.

Breakdowns of Duolingo's social media strategy usually credit the owl. The owl is the output. The strategy is a system: a mascot with an ongoing story, an always-on social team, and new users as the goal. That system worked, and it depended on one person's pace. If you run a brand account, that dependence is the part to study.

Duolingo's own TikTok from November 2021 carries the caption "no owls were harmed during the making of this film."

What is Duolingo's social media strategy?

Duolingo's social media strategy has been unhinged marketing built around one character. HubSpot defined unhinged marketing in 2023 as brands taking "less of a polished, perfect approach to social" and embracing "more chaotic conversational moments." Duolingo pointed that chaos at Duo.

The Drum reported in February 2025 that Duolingo's TikTok had grown from 50,000 followers to 16 million in a little over four years. In January 2026, a Brand24 social media audit counted 16.3 million TikTok followers. In the same audit, Duolingo's YouTube, X, TikTok, and Instagram accounts all topped 4 percent engagement.

The posts had a business goal. "Before, it was about impressions and press hits," Zaria Parvez, Duolingo's senior global social media manager, told The Drum in February 2025. "Now, it's about what are the actual new user numbers that are coming." In Q3 2025, Duolingo passed 50 million daily active users and grew revenue 41 percent year over year, per its third-quarter results release.

How does Duolingo use Duo the owl?

Duolingo treats Duo as a character with continuity. Duo guilts users who skip a lesson. Duo dies and comes back.

In February 2025, Duolingo announced Duo had died and set a goal of 50 billion XP to revive him. Users earned 50.9 billion XP, NPR reported. The campaign drew 1.7 billion organic impressions, and the company "spent practically nothing," per Duolingo's Q1 2025 shareholder letter.

Global Android downloads rose 38 percent the next day, TechCrunch reported from Similarweb data.

Duolingo did not ask anyone to download an app. It asked them to save something they cared about.

Who runs Duolingo's social media?

For five years, the best-known name behind it was Zaria Parvez. She left on August 15, 2025, after "five unforgettable years, 8 billion impressions and even more jaw-drops," Adweek reported. She went on to lead social at DoorDash, The Drum reported.

Duolingo posted "RIP DUO" to its own TikTok on February 11, 2025, six months before she left.

The pace had a cost. Parvez took medical leave in 2024 after feeling "confused and exhausted" from managing the accounts, The Drum reported in September 2025. She told the outlet that much of the job is being "always on." She "grind-ed" because she wanted to grow fast, "and it was working."

The pace that made Duo go viral is the same pace that wore her down. I read that as a structural problem.

The tone may be changing too. In April 2026, Duolingo was reported to be dialing back the unhinged posts for more wholesome TikTok content, paid creators, Reddit, and WhatsApp. Mark Ritson wrote in The Drum that Duolingo tied the shift to falling organic reach on TikTok.

What can brands learn from Duolingo?

Three moves transfer to any brand account. I would build each one in from the start.

  1. Write the character down. Keep a shared reference for the mascot's rules, relationships, and limits, so it never lives in one head.
  2. Tier the response. Some moments get same-day content, some get a planned take within the week, and most get skipped. IKEA's Responsive team runs each post through a checklist, Link in Bio reported in September 2026.
  3. Tie posts to a business number. Duolingo moved its goal from impressions to new users. It still does not report how social contributed to them, so I would ask for assisted-conversion data before calling the strategy proven.

A character people follow is worth building. Build it to outlast the person who started it and the platform that made it famous.

Who runs the brand account you follow most, and do you know their name? For a campaign I built and ran myself, read the Thai restaurant Google Ads case, or see how Fishwife grew a cult following.
